Kai Wiedenhöfer, born in Germany in 1966, received a MA in photography and editorial design from the Folkwang University of the Arts Essen and studied Arabic in Damascus, Syria. Since 1989 the focus of his work is mainly the Middle East. He has received numerous awards, as the Leica Medal of Excellence, the Alexia Grant for World Peace and Cultural Understanding, World Press Photo Awards, the Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography and the Carmignac Gestion Photojournalism Award. He has published four books with Steidl “Perfect Peace“ (2002) , “Wall“ (2007) and “The Book of Destruction“ (2010) which was exhibited as a solo exhibition in the Musée d´Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. In 2013 his fourth volume “CONFRONTIER “ about separation walls worldwide was published by Steidl. The photographs were exhibited in the show WALLONWALL on 364m (or 1200sqm) of the Berlin Wall.

Kai Wiedenhoofer connait bien le conflit israélo- palestinien, il s’y consacre depuis plus de vingt ans. Pendant toutes ces années, il a articulé son travail autour de recherches documentaires pour pénétrer au cœur du problème et rendre compte le plus justement possible d’un conflit inextricable qui déchire le Moyen- Orient depuis plus de soixante ans. Il parle couramment l’arabe. Par son œil de photojournaliste aguerri, il interroge le réel avec une sensibilité et une humanité particulière. Since October 2003, photographer Kai Wiedenhöfer, who has been documenting the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for more than a decade, has been meeting with inhabitants of the Occupied Palestinian Territories living in the path of the barrier. Every six months, he has been returning to the territories to document the construction of the 650 kilometers of walls, fences, ditches and earth mounds, which form the border between the State of Israel and a future Palestinian entity.
