The exhibition ‹abstract› as the definition most simply states is quite simply an „abstract“ and concurrently a small exploration into the possibilites of abstract photography now. Since 2003 abstract photography has been a central and recurring theme of the gallery programme. Next to three artists the gallery has worked with since 2003 - Antonio Azuaga (Spain), Richard Caldicott (Great Britain) and John Goto (Great Britain), we have invited Edward Mapplethorpe (USA) and Silvio Wolf (Italy) to show their latest work. From the beginning of photography in the late 19th Century, the medium has often defined itself through the often dramatic rivalry of painting versus photography. But abstract photography has been a small but fascinating strand, ever since the beginnings, from Henry Fox Talbot&rsquo...
Within this new series of large format works, Richard Caldicott marks a fundamental shift and return to previous concerns, that of the still life motif. "I wanted to deal with concrete objects again." Caldicott.
Reminiscent of his Tupperware series exhibited at Hamiltons in Spring 2002, these ordinary plastic cups assume a seductive, pensive aura, they are about colour and light rather than the objects themselves. The viewer is encouraged to look beyond the practical surface of the work and celebrate the unexpected beauty of these mundane household items. "A plastic cup can be the most banal form possible and the work tests the viewers attention; will they allow the simplicity of this object to be contemplative or will they dismiss it completely?" The early work of Richard Caldicott is in dialogue with the tradition of the photographic still-life and its reference into abstract painting. His objects of plastic everyday day Tupperware are taken out of its context and are canonised into the realms of 60's abstract art in a post modern, humorous manner. As Christopher Schreier writes: "Of a quite commanding, space-impinging presence, their dispute with painting, however, lies on a different, non-metric level. Even a first impression reveals the painterly qualities of his art. what we take in is summed up in a phrase Eugene Delacroix once coined for painting, namely "sensations colourantes", the visual sensations that seem sufficient unto themselves and the eye of the beholder.
