Christenberry’s writings emerge from the literary tradition of the American Deep South and yet can clearly be seen as an integral part of his oeuvre. Exhibition : « True South » at PDNB Gallery
Press release - In conjunction with Jeanine Michna-Bales' show reflecting on the history of the Underground Railroad, PDNB Gallery has organized a group exhibition of photographs of the South spanning many decades.
True South includes powerful images of the people and landscapes, from the Deep South to Texas. Several photographer's represented in this exhibition are part of PDNB Gallery's artist stable. A few artists will be new to the gallery, including Brandon Thibodeaux (b. 1981) and Ferne Koch (1913 - 2001). Thibodeaux's photographs of the Mississippi Delta will be part of the show and will be included in his upcoming book, When Morning Comes.

Exhibition : « The Order of Things » from The Walther Collection
The Walther Collection presents "The Order of Things: Photography from The Walther Collection", a major exhibition exploring how the organization of photographs into systematic sequences or typologies has affected modern visual culture. The Order of Things investigates the production and uses of serial portraiture, conceptual structures, vernacular imagery, and time-based performance in photography from the 1880s to the present, bringing together works by artists from Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. Curated by Brian Wallis, former Chief Curator at the International Center of Photography in New York, the exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Steidl/The Walther Collection.

William Christenberry’s distinctive art emerged in the 1960s, informed by a deep attachment to the rural landscapes and the material culture of his boyhood home in Alabama. Already familiar with Walker Evans’s photographs documenting the effects of the Great Depression in the South, Christenberry met with Evans at Time-Life in New York to show him photographs that he had made with an amateur Brownie camera. William Christenberry Photographs: 1961-2005 will present nearly a half-century of the work of William Christenbery whose photographic exploration of the American South has been ongoing for forty years. Drawing inspiration from such pioneers as Walker Evans (American, 1903-1975) and Bernd and Hilla Becher (German, b. 1931 and 1934), Christenberry has been a major influence on a generation of emerging photographers. Ranging from his earliest Brownie photographs from the early 1960s to later work with a large-format camera, this project surveys the artist's poetic documentation of Southern vernacular architecture, signage, and landscape, capturing moments of quiet beauty in a sometimes rustic terrain. Coupling never-before-seen photographs, both old and new, with now-iconic images, the exhibition presents 50 vintage photog...
